Longmire season 6: Filming — for five different episodes!

five different episodes

How can filming for five different episodes of Longmire season 6 take place in a tiny span of time? Let’s just say that weather is a factor!

In a post on Twitter this week, series star Lou Diamond Phillips (Henry Standing Bear) confirmed that he and many of the other season 6 directors had the task of shooting several different episodes at very close to the same time, mostly because the location of Walt’s cabin is in a place that they couldn’t previously get to thanks to snow in the area making it impossible to get to. (Hey, sometimes even Mother Nature does have a role to play in TV production!)

As you would expect, filming scenes for five different episodes in the span of a single day can be challenging, but that is precisely what the team accomplished. “Pick up scenes” often can mean a wide array of different things following the end of principal photography — sometimes, this is a way to do reshoots to capture a few different elements of a scene, or it can be to do close-up shots of scenes without the actors present for them. Consider this one of the many wonderful little touches to ensure that Longmire is as great of a show as it can possibly be.

Filming for season 6 will be continuing for the next several weeks in New Mexico, and will premiere coming up on Neftlix this September presumably. The fact that the entire season films before Netflix starts streaming is one of the reasons why pick up scenes are possible; the show has such a window where they can complete their work, and there is plenty of postproduction time for things like this and ADR work.

The most important thing is that there are some fantastic stories to come in season 6, and there are so many things to resolve. For example, Phillips’ Henry needs to figure out a way to survive his present predicament, while Robert Taylor’s Walt Longmire also has to figure out a way in which to move forward after so much scrutiny was thrust in his direction and his job was put on the line. There are also many other stories to watch, including the status of Vic’s pregnancy and the rest of Barry Sloane’s Zachary, even if it is just a short visit.
