Madam Secretary season 3 finale: Was there peace for Elizabeth McCord?

Madam Secretary season 3 finale

Going into Sunday night’s Madam Secretary season 3 finale, it was clear that the walls were closing in on Elizabeth and Henry McCord. Given that this is the last episode until spring, did you really expect anything different?

When it comes to international affairs, one of the biggest issues to combat here was French interference in Bulgaria, possible NATO violations, and trying to determine the right way to handle a crisis that threatened to tear apart Europe. This episode was entitled “Article 5” for a reason — she wanted to have this enacted as a means of keeping Europe together. With France abstaining from the vote, Elizabeth learned that there were the necessary votes needed in order to enact the resolution. With that — and some help from Nadine, Mike, and others, she managed to get precisely what she wanted.

After the resolution was passed, Elizabeth and her team had an opportunity to celebrate! Well, she did have a chance to after some negotiations with the Russians. It was in these conversations that she was able to resolve both the Article 5 crisis and also the retrieval of a deceased soldier, someone who had been at the focal point of the story thanks to a Gold Star mother who was becoming increasingly outspoken that her song was not getting the proper burial she deserved. Not only did this happen in the closing minutes of this episode, but there was a full military presence to boot.

The episode ended with Elizabeth actually getting an opportunity to celebrate in a way in which she wanted — heading off to a cabin and disconnecting from much of the world. It’s something that she pressed the kids on earlier in the episode, but in the end, that hope paid off. Elizabeth and Henry arrived to the cabin realizing that the kids were already inside and a fire was going . Insert “aww” here…

In the end, the biggest surprise of the finale is probably that there was no surprise at all. Elizabeth saved the day, and everyone seemed happy by the time the end credits rolled. At the end of the craziness last season, someone clearly wanted an ending that was much more muted this time.
