The Flash season 3 finale promo: The ‘is H.R. dead?’ theory

is H.R. dead

Is H.R. dead? This is one of the more interesting theories floating around out there leading into The Flash season 3 finale next week.

The reason for this theory’s existence probably begins and ends because of one simple fact: The death of Iris West. In the wake of Savitar seemingly fulfilling the prophecy and continuing his ascension into godhood, it makes sense that we would all do everything in our power to believe that this is not actually so. Somehow, there has to be a way for her to still be alive … right?

Well, there are some reasons why this theory is out there, and much of it begins with the whole face-swap technology that was conveniently brought back into the forefront during the earlier portion of “Infantino Street” when Barry and Leonard Snart used it in their quest to get the Dominator technology out of its ARGUS prison. It’s at the forefront of the mind now, and seemingly H.R. could have put himself in Iris’ place so that he was the one killed rather than her.

As for why he would do this, there was even a sense of that presented in this episode that he wanted to feel like he had some sort of purpose to his life. The majority of what he did was bluster when he was with Team Flash — he was encouraging and hyper-creative, but he didn’t have any superpowers or technical skills. He had to determine some other ways in order to play a part. For him, making this sacrifice could have been a way for him to rise to the top of the pack as one of the most heroic figures in the multiverse, effectively supplanting him as a greater hero than one in any story that he wrote.

Doesn’t this also feel like the right time to say just how amazing Tom Cavanagh is as a performer? There are effectively four different Harrison Wells since the start of the show: Thawne-as-Wells, Wells before Thawne, Earth-2 Wells, and now H.R. from Earth-19. this is without mentioning the cowboy or mime iterations that were briefly seen earlier this season as the team looked for a new version of Wells.

Whether or not someone decided to take Iris’ place with Savitar is right up there with where in the world Julian Albert went last night as one of the greatest The Flash theories.
