Dancing with the Stars: Was Len Goodman too harsh on Bonner Bolton?

Len Goodman

Len Goodman is the Dancing with the Stars judge that has a tendency to be a little bit blunt (and that’s putting it nicely). With that said, we can’t be too shocked by his latest comments.

Following Bonner Bolton and Sharna Burgess’ performance tonight (one that received a pretty harsh score for this stage in the competition), Len basically told him to his face that he’s come too far in the competition and really doesn’t deserve to be there. This is far from the first time that we’ve seen Len say something like this, but usually when he does, it’s with people like Master P who don’t have any business being there. He simply wasn’t trying that hard, and we think that Bonner is doing the best that he can. He’s not a great dancer, but he works at it and is trying to improve which is supposed to be what the show is about. Remember here that the stars aren’t professional dancers and this is supposed to be about personal improvement over the course of the competition.

As for why he’s still a part of the competition, there is one specific demographic that has been voting to keep him every week and that’s middle America. You’ve got people from the South who see someone in Bonner who is similar to themselves, and they like that and want to support him. This is a voting block that previously got Bill Engvall far further in the competition than he deserved, and the same goes for Bristol Palin back during her first season on the show.

Purists may not love the fact that Bonner is there over performers like Nancy Kerrigan and Heather Morris, and if the voting public didn’t exist, they surely still would be there. Ultimately, though, having people like Bonner still around is one of the reasons why this show is so fun and unique. You want to see stars with no dancing experience grow with the show and improve.

In the end, we’re pretty sure that Bonner is going to be eliminated soon, whether it be now or in the episode airing in one week. Odds are, we’re gearing up for a finale with Rashad Jennings, Simone Biles, and Normani Kordei … this is at least the way it should be.
