Madam Secretary season 3 episode 21: The tale of kidnapped journalists
Specifically here, it’s not about someone getting themselves into a meth trade at all! (Really, we just wanted to throw the Breaking Bad reference in here as someone who loves the show.) The main story that this sneak peek is referencing is one about a kidnapped journalist being held hostage in the Sudan, someone who is in an interesting position right now where the government may be willing to orchestrate a release.
Here’s the operative term here, though: “may.” There are no guarantees of anything, and it is very well possible that these attempts turn up fruitless and the journalist remains there trapped in one form or another.
Sometimes, we wonder if there is an element of clairvoyance among the writing staff for Madam Secretary, Law & Order: SVU, Homeland, and many other shows of this type when it comes to their ability to project real-life headlines into the story. The capture of Americans, whether it be journalists, tourists, or other professions, abroad is something that we’ve seen quite a bit of over the course of time. Take very recently many of the headlines about Americans detained in North Korea; in general, this country is frequently in the headlines, and it shouldn’t come as much of a shock that it also is now today.
Seeing this preview should give you another sense of what is going on in the real world, but also that maybe there is still a chance for peace and compromise on the other side. As a whole, Madam Secretary is an optimistic show, one that often does try to spread a message of hope and understanding. At this point in history, we do certainly think that this is important, and something that the show is probably right to emphasize at this point. It may be easy to cultivate a huge cliffhanger at the end of the season in some ways; showing restraint, on the other hand, may also be just as effective in the end for continuing along the show’s specific tone.
