The further we make it into Law & Order: SVU season 18, the more apparent it will be that the culture of content is significant to the surrounding world. When the show returns on April 26, it will be with an episode entitled “The Newsroom” that will be looking at sexual harassment and rape allegations within a work organization.

Some of the first details that we have surrounding the upcoming May 3 episode entitled “Very Fake News” seem to strong suggest that the media in an outwardly sense will be at the center of the story. Benson and Rollins will find themselves in a difficult and precarious position where a “salacious” website, according to NBC, will start to torment them.

Meanwhile, you’re also going to see another situation involving a website / publication in the episode. A powerful Congressman (played by James Waterston) is going to ask the Special Victims Unit for their help in debunking a rumor out there about him soliciting underage rumors. However, in the midst of their investigation, the team is going to uncover a real sex trafficking ring. Is the Congressman linked to it? You’ll have to see the episode to find out, but we figure that the case will likely be complicated by the perception of guilt that already exists within the initial allegation.

Trying to separate the truth from fiction is the responsibility of the SVU team, but no doubt it gets more and more difficult in a culture that accepts truth as whatever they define it to be. We live in a world now full of spin and multiple outlets; therefore, we are often going to choose the one that matches our own point of view, regardless of whether or not said point of view is the one that is truly authentic. Even if the truth is unpopular, Benson and Rollins still have to find it.

Beyond the story, we’re mostly excited to see Kelli Giddish have a little more of a spotlight episode. It feels as though it’s been a while since we had an opportunity to see her placed front and center in such a way.
