Supernatural season 12: Amanda Tapping directs ‘The Future’

Supernatural season 12 episode 20

One of the great things about Supernatural as a series is that they find ways to let their stars express their artistic freedom. Even if they’re not acting on the series anymore, they often find ways to have them come back in other roles!

In addition to allowing series regulars like Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins to direct, we’ve seen such alumni as Richard Speight Jr. take on the role in the past. Now, we know that Amanda Tapping (who previously played Naomi for many episodes of the CW series) is going to be taking on the role of director for the upcoming April 27 episode entitled “The Future.” This is hardly her directorial debut for the show, but it is the first time that she’s taken on the role for this show.

The synopsis below, meanwhile, gives you a few more details regarding what is coming up next:

“Sam (Jared Padalecki) comes up with a way to stop Lucifer’s (Mark Pellegrino) baby but Castiel (Misha Collins) has something else in mind for Kelly (guest star Courtney Ford). Dean (Jensen Ackles) is furious when he finds out someone stole the colt. Kelly makes a bold choice about the baby’s future.”

Clearly, this is going to be a big episode for the whole Lucifer / Kelly Kline story, which has been one of the central threads of the entire season. For those who’ve enjoyed having Ford on the show, this will be another chance to see her. The title certainly seems appropriate when you think for a minute about some of what this episode is about. So much of Supernatural is about taking care of issues that exist in the moment without regard so much as to some of the repercussions down the road. With Lucifer’s baby, you have to think about the future given that this could matter so much not only to this character, but also for Sam and Dean Winchester. We’ll be curious to learn precisely how things that happen here end up influencing story when you look a little more towards either the end of this season or season 13.
