Last Week Tonight with John Oliver takes on federal budget, Bolivian zebras

federal budget -

Tonight, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver delivered its latest scathing attack, and this time around, the focuses was a little bit more on the financial side of things. Specifically, we’re talking the federal budget. We know that this isn’t the hottest topic in the world, but it’s still interesting and there are a lot of things worthy of discussion.

Specifically, what we saw in here was a takedown about everything that the federal budget is going to do, including takedowns of key educational programs and other things that help families in a wide array of different ways. They’re valuable, and some of Oliver’s examples served to suggest that Donald Trump and his administration are cutting out programs that would benefit some members of his own base. He also specifically cited Trump’s famed The Art of Deal when it comes to some of the promises he’s made that he may not be able to fulfill.

In looking at the comedic side of things, this was a very funny segment from Oliver in between some of his references to Ghost and him making fun of his own haircut. What surprised us was how quick the segment went by, given that he didn’t actually let this run for a good 15-20 minutes.

Well, let’s just say that there is a reason why this segment ended…

Bolivian zebras – This one of the weirdest segments in the history of Last Week Tonight. What this was basically was Oliver explaining how in the Bolivian capacity of La Paz, there are people dressed as zebras who patrol the streets and help to stop traffic accidents. Somehow, this actually works! Also, it’s hilarious. This was such a positive, goofy segment that showed that there are some interesting ideas that are working out there that actually work.

What makes this story even better was learning that some of the people in zebra costumes were actually young people who were recovering drug and alcohol addicts. Basically, they were crossing guards who were finding a way to make people feel better, stopping traffic accidents, and also helping people who desperately need a job.

All in all, a great episode — the best thing about Last Week Tonight is the element of surprise. The show also posted online 23 minutes of a zebra in front of a green screen for whatever the internet sees fit.
