The Last Man on Earth season 3 finale sets up potential season 4

The Last Man on Earth -

Will The Last Man on Earth get a season 4 renewal? That’s unclear, but apparently, the season 3 finale sets one up perfectly. As a matter of fact, it sets it up so well that there will probably be people who are angry in the event that the show doesn’t come back for more.

Speaking to TVLine, series star Will Forte teased some of what could be coming up in the final episode of the season with the following, which has to be one of the great teases that we’ve heard all year so far:

“[The] finale of Season 3 would be a real bummer for people if it didn’t come back for a fourth season, because there’s something that happens [in the episode] that opens the gateway to the possibility of stuff. I’m really excited about how it ends… And I think that people probably have a good idea what it is.”

Unfortunately, at the moment Fox isn’t tilting its cap one way or the other about the show’s future. It is averaging at the moment around a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is down around 15% compared to season 2. That’s not great, but it’s not all that worse of a year-to-year decline than many of the other shows that are on Fox at the moment. Plus, look at how many of their other live-action comedies are performing. It’s ratings are right about even with the current season of New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and if you take away some of its special airings, it’s just about there with The Mick, which already was renewed for another season at Fox.

With all of this, we do think that it’d be terrible for Fox to not renew the show for one more season, at least to give Forte and company a chance to wrap things up. It’s one of the more unique comedies out there, and we don’t see many other networks even having the guts to give something like this a shot.

Fox has until May ultimately to make their decision, given that this is when they will hold their upfront presentation in New York City. We’d ideally love to know about the show’s future before then.
