Doctor Who season 11: Sacha Dhawan of Sherlock throws name into casting ring
At the moment, the majority of the Doctor Who speculation is for fun and can’t be taken altogether seriously. All we know for certain is that someone will probably be announced in the months leading up to the upcoming Christmas Special.
Let’s now get back to Dhawan, and the specific pitch that he made — if you can even call it a pitch. All the Sherlock did to campaign for the part was say the following to the Radio Times:
“Oh my God, I’d absolutely love to … I SO would love to. I’ve worked with [frequent Doctor Who writer Mark Gatiss] quite a lot, and I think I’d bring something really exciting to it. It’d be incredibly nerve-wracking to do to be honest. It’s quite a lot of pressure.
“When the list came out, I was so honoured really that I was even considered,” he went on. “And that alone was kind of good enough. But who wouldn’t want to do it? It’s Doctor Who.”
We do love quotes like this, mostly because it puts the onus on just how remarkable the role of The Doctor is and precisely how many people would be thrilled to play the part. It throws so much of the cynicism that is out there out the window and focuses on the magic and the prestige of the part. Whoever does get this part, whether it be Sacha or someone else, should have this level of enthusiasm. One of the reasons why it was so easy to be excited for Peter Capaldi being cast as The Doctor was simply because of the fact that he was booked for the role following many years of him being a fan. You knew that the project was in good hands, and he would carry the responsibility.
