The Originals season 4 premiere: Did Hayley bring Elijah back?

One thing that was easy to assume within The Orignals season 4 premiere on Friday night was that the Mikaelson family was not going to be gone for long. It’s a show that thrives on their complicated relationships, and them constantly going from loving to hating to loving each other.

Still, the show did somehow figure out a way to make the return of Elijah all the more emotional in this episode. After all, who else rejoiced at the chance to see that kiss between him and Hayley? She, with the help of several others, was able to get him back from his five-year slumber, and that produced quite the powerful moment. It means that their relationship could be in a good place as we press onward into the season.

As for Klaus, he’s still … Klaus. He’s trapped within a prison while he continues to reject the notion that he is different or “changed” in any way. He’s regressing as a result of both circumstance, and probably heartache. Also, he has to be stuck constantly dealing with the manipulations of Marcel, who is now leading New Orleans. This could be a problem for more than just Klaus; it could be for almost everyone. (Granted, Marcel really did get it in good with Klaus during some of those torture scenes, easily the grittiest part of the entire premiere.)

For the most part, we’d say that this was as good of a premiere as The Originals could have given some of the trying, challenging circumstances that it found itself facing. Remember that this is a show that did premiere after the series finale of The Vampire Diaries, and because of the timelines of the two shows, was in a position where it could really make no mention of much of what happened over there. The show effectively forced you to have to be keenly aware of the history and everything that’s happened as to not get too confused.

Ultimately, this is a show about moments. If you love Hayley and Elijah, or if you love brilliant and gritty performances from Joseph Morgan, than the premiere episode probably was right up your alley.
