MTV’s Scream season 3 may be entirely different show

Scream season 3 -

If you enjoyed the characters from the first two seasons of Screamwe hope you’re not too attached if you decide to keep watching. After all, it’s looking more and more like Scream season 3 will be an entirely new show than either of the seasons that aired before it.

According to a new report from Deadline, the upcoming Scream season 3 (currently slated to be only six episodes) is going to feature a different set of characters and be completely unrelated to what you saw for the first two years. As a matter of fact, the folks at MTV have already given permission to the original cast to go and find other work — that’s why Willa Fitzgerald was recently cast in the Behind Enemy Lines pilot on Fox, where she would be a regular if the show is picked up to series. (Given that this is only six episodes, we could’ve envisioned ways that she and other original cast members could do both and have it work in their schedules.)

The search is also underway for a new showrunner to help navigate the new cast through whatever it is that they’re going to have coming up. Basically, this is going to feel like an entirely different show, so there’s not all that much about it that is going to feel familiar to anything that we’ve seen before. We feel like it’s going to be very much interesting to see if this idea brings in new viewers who are intrigued by the concept, it just alienates the few viewers that the show already has.

Here’s the weird thing about the idea of making Scream season 3 its own thing — it’s almost a surprise that the show was renewed in the first place, given that the ratings the second time out were not good after MTV made some rather questionable moves when it comes to scheduling. The network does need to find some further hits, though, given that Teen Wolf is ending and one of their other buzz-worthy shows in Sweet/Vicious is still waiting to see what its future is going to be. That show is particularly loved by many within the journalism community, but it doesn’t have much in the way of ratings to back things up.

Do you think that a new Scream season 3 could work, or is the show running the risk of alienating the majority of the people who already watched and loved the show in the first place? Share in the comments. (Photo: MTV.)
