Shadowhunters season 3: How recent ratings impact renewal odds

Shadowhunters season 3 -

Is a Shadowhunters season 3 renewal on the horizon? The only people who know that for sure at the moment are some of the bigwigs over at Freeform, but for the time being, we can say this: Recent ratings leave us a tad more optimistic.

Based on the figures for Shadowhunters season 2 episode 10 that were posted earlier in the week, the show is a little bit more on the upswing. This episode, which featured a wide array of surprises surrounding Valentine, Clary, and others, drew a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Meanwhile, in total 640,000 viewers ended up watching the episode, which puts it on par with some recent installments. It’s also an increase from what the show had the week before. Given that this was the midseason finale, Shadowhunters needed to show a little bit of a boost to give the network some further reasons to be optimistic.

The first thing to remember here next is that Shadowhunters season 3 is not coming up in the summer / the fall — there are still ten more episodes in season 2! We understand the confusion given the split-season format, which is something that we still don’t understand beyond the fact that classifying two batches of episodes (a summer / winter half, if you will) is a way for the network to designate things in a way that could save them some money in the long run.

There is no hurry at present for Freeform to announce a renewal … at least not yet. We do think that if they want season 3 to air in the winter of next year, they may need to make a decision in the coming months. They’ll need to give the writers time to cultivate some new scripts, especially since this is a show that requires a little more post-production than a Pretty Little Liars or some of the other shows that air on the network. Therefore, giving extra time basically equals giving you a further opportunity to succeed.

One other thing to remember here with the ratings in general is that Freeform doesn’t just get viewers from people who watch live. There are also viewers who are coming in via the app, via DVR ratings, via streaming platforms, and a few other places. If you’re watching a version of the show with advertisements, odds are you’re helping to keep the show going. If you love Shadowhunters and want to keep it on the air, keep that in mind.
