Riverdale season 2 renewal confirmed by The CW
This news effectively means that the Archie Comics adaptation will have another run during the 2017-18 season, and that the writers can go ahead and also start to think of some stories that they want to throw at Archie, Betty, Jughead, Veronica, and many of the show’s other familiar faces. This is a series that started off with rave reviews, and while its ratings haven’t been the beast we thought they would be, we’ve also seen a commitment by the network when it comes to sticking to quality programming – and Riverdale is definitely quality! This is a dramatic, incredibly-entertaining adaptation that somehow works even when at times you think it’s far too crazy for the source material.
Just in case you’re wondering about DVR numbers, Deadline reports that they’ve been very strong both in live+3 and live+7 measures … especially when it comes to a younger audience. Given that the comics were popular long before many of the current generation of viewers were alive (we remember reading them during summer camp too long ago for us to admit), this had to be one of the most encouraging things that network executives saw. It was easily enough to push them into ordering another run, especially when you look at the fan base that is already rallying around this show.
What also likely helped was the great relationship that exists already between the network and super-producer Greg Berlanti. He has this show to go along with the four superhero shows that are all a part of the shared universe. He could even have a sixth show in Black Lightning depending on whether or not it is well-received on the other side of pilot season. Clearly, Berlanti has figured something out when it comes to this audience and adapting existing properties.
New episodes of Riverdale air on The CW Thursday night. One thing to look forward to is a new article coming to CarterMatt tomorrow detailing what the show does better then any other show when it comes to it’s use of social media. Few other series have figured out unique ways to leverage their audience into unique shares, but Riverdale has people talking and sharing online. The show’s social presence may have been an additional reason why the show is coming back, so further kudos to them.
