Big Little Lies episode 3 preview: Who’s ‘Living the Dream,’ really?

Big Little Lies -

For some people out there, we imagine that you already are getting a chance to dive into the second episode of HBO’s Big Little Lies. The folks over at HBO are smart, and they realized that it wasn’t going to do them a whole lot of good to air a new episode of the show right against the Oscars. Viewers would forget about it, and that would put their new series in a world of trouble.

Therefore, the network did a rather smart thing as the episode was put online early. We don’t expect much in the way of big ratings tonight, but that’s something worth getting into more in the weeks to come.

Tonight, the big thing that we want to emphasize (and no, not the Big Little thing) is what’s coming up on Big Little Lies episode 3 as the scandals, the surprises, and the drama continue to unravel.

Synopsis – “Hoping to get under Renata’s (Laura Dern) skin, Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) organizes a trip to compete with Amabella’s (Ivy George) birthday party. After another argument, Celeste (Nicole Kidman) succumbs to Perry’s (Alexander Skarsgard) charms before their first session with Dr. Amanda Reisman (Robin Weigert), a therapist. Madeline gets called for a meeting with Abigail’s (Kathryn Newton) guidance counselor. Principal Nippal (P.J. Byrne) announces the theme for the Fall Gala Fundraiser. Later, Jane (Shailene Woodley) seeks Madeline’s help with Ziggy’s (Iain Armitage) family tree project, and opens up about her past.”

What this show is probably going to do a remarkable job of doing over the course of this season is finding a way to take somewhat conventional events, and then make them into something that is heightened, emotional, and surprising. Having a great cast and an adaptation from famed writer/producer David E. Kelley probably helps in that department. You know you are getting someone very much at the top of their game.
