‘Call the Midwife’ spoilers: Be prepared for a very different Christmas Special

Call the Midwife -

Sure, the next “Call the Midwife” Christmas Special is not coming for another ten or so months, but why would we want to share some news about it for that long when we’ve got it now? The special that we saw at the end of last year was both fascinating and very different, given the fact that we got to see many of the main characters all the way down in South Africa, where they encountered some different cultures and learned a thing or two more about themselves in the process. Also, these scenes gave us the proposal for Barbara and Tom, so anything that leads to the two of them getting engaged is rather easily something that is worthy of a celebration or two.

So where will the story go moving forward to this Christmas? As series writer Heidi Thomas explains to What’s On TV, the show appears to be shifting things in the opposite direction, and focusing a little more on one of the coldest winters ever recorded in the United Kingdom:

“We made the most of last year’s golden South African Call the Midwife Christmas special – we already knew there would be no blue skies and no sunburn this year! We’ve been aware for a while that this series brings us up to the Big Freeze of 1962-63 – the coldest British winter for 300 years. Story details are still in development, but it was a legendary winter and will provide us with an amazing background for our Christmas visit to Nonnatus House.”

Sound exciting? This certainly does to us, given that we do enjoy these episodes where you get to see the midwives so far out of their element. One of the quirkier things about this special, though, could just come via the timing of it all. Remember for a minute here that the special is going to be filming in the summer, so the producers are going to need to a rather good job of convincing everyone that the weather is way colder than it actually is.
