Rachel Lindsay named star of ‘The Bachelorette’; ABC spoils ‘The Bachelor’ in the process

Rachel -Well, isn’t this exciting — and surprising?

For days, “The Bachelor” creator Mike Fleiss has been teasing a big announcement coming on tonight’s new episode, and it just so turns out that it pertained to the decision as to who would be the next star in the franchise. ABC has already made their decision, and it’s Rachel Lindsay will be the lead!

The big news about this casting is that Lindsay, an attorney from Dallas, is the first black Bachelor or Bachelorette in the history of the show. This is also the first time we can remember that this news has been announced before the contestant was eliminated. There is some precedent at least in that Nick Viall was announced as the next Bachelor over the summer while “Bachelor in Paradise” was still airing, but that’s a different show and the perception of the news as a “spoiler” is not exactly the same.

Now that we know this news officially, it means that you can watch the remainder of this season knowing that Rachel at some point along the way will be eliminated.

The one reasons we can think of in terms of why ABC announced this now is to make a bigger headline, and to also aid in casting so that they can find men from all backgrounds who are interested in dating Rachel. One of the main arguments we’ve heard people make against a minority lead for this show is that the Bachelor Nation base would reject it. We don’t actually think that this is the cast; maybe some will, but there will be many more people attracted to the show this summer because of getting to see someone who is totally different from anyone else that’s been cast.

Ultimately, all we know is that we’re very much thrilled to see that the show is finally looking at being more diverse, and Rachel’s an entertaining, successful, and great person to carry the torch.
