‘Grey’s Anatomy’ renewed for season 14; ‘Scandal,’ ‘How to Get Away with Murder’ also coming back

Grey's AnatomyGiven the continued success of #TGIT on ABC, it felt like a no-brainer that you would continue to see more of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal,” and “How to Get Away with Murder.” Today, ABC was just kind enough to finally make the news official. The three series are officially renewed, which means that there will be a season 14, a season 7, and a season 4 for them coming up in the 2017-18 TV season.

“Grey’s Anatomy” – For this show, the renewal means that ABC will be keeping its biggest scripted drama in terms of viewers 18-49 for at least one more year. It’s remarkable just how it’s managed to stay on the air, and with its ratings consistency, we’re starting to feel like it could air for however long Shonda Rhimes and Ellen Pompeo continue to want to be involved. Without the involvement of one of them, it’s hard to imagine it working anymore.

“Scandal” – Meanwhile, the Kerry Washington series remains a solid performer, even if its not the runaway success that it was back during its peak two or three years ago. The show’s moved over to shorter seasons similar to “How to Get Away with Murder,” and that will probably hold firm moving into next season. There’s been talk about winding it down for the past year or so, but it may have another season or two in the tank.

“How to Get Away with Murder” – Sure, the ratings aren’t necessarily out of this world, but it and “Designated Survivor” are the top 10:00 p.m. series that ABC has. Also, Viola Davis is probably going to win an Academy Award later this month. Do you really want to get rid of a show when you’ve got a potential Oscar winner in your cast? That just screams “terrible move” to us more so than anything else.

What’s your reaction to this news, and is there any renewal in particular that you are excited about the most? Be sure to share some of your thoughts right now with a comment, and head over here to get some other news when it comes to “Grey’s Anatomy.” (Photo: ABC.)
