‘Santa Clarita Diet’ finale clearly sets stage for season 2 story

Santa -Before we get any further into this article, let’s start with a SPOILER warning: There are details ahead on the season 1 finale of “Santa Clarita Diet.” Don’t continue reading unless you don’t mind knowing what happens or you’ve already wrapped up watching the ten-episode first season.

Still with us? Then read on…

In the closing minutes of the finale, we saw the character of Sheila (Drew Barrymore) go a little into overdrive when it comes to her eating habits, becoming aggressive and violent towards her own husband Joel (Timothy Olyphant). As a result of all this, Sheila ends up chaining herself up in the basement. Meanwhile, Joel finds himself arrested and opening up far too much after everything he’s gone through. We suppose that after having this sort of insane secret, there may have been some essence of therapy that came from being able to open yourself up to some sort of conversation about what was going on.

In speaking to Entertainment Weekly, creator Victor Fresco made it clear precisely why these cliffhangers were intentional, and at the same time, also how confident he seems to be that the show is coming back:

“We wanted to keep ratcheting things up and we knew we wanted to end on a fun cliffhanger to get us into a second season … Through the course of the season, their lives are slowly going more and more off the rails, and then we leave them at this place where their lives have gone off the rails.”

While Netflix has not renewed the show just yet, there is a perfectly good reason for Fresco to be confident. This is a streaming service with a great history of bringing shows back for additional seasons, and with the star power and the buzz around this one, it almost feels like a sure thing … even though we’re pretty sure that some people out there are going to work their way through it in a matter of a few days.
