‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13, episode 11: Let’s assess that Meredith – Alex ending
Mrs. Carter: Was there something to the end of Thursday’s “Grey’s Anatomy” episode between Meredith and Alex?
In the closing minutes, we saw something that was both significant and joyous — Alex was not in prison as Meredith feared. He wasn’t even being held. It’s possible that he found a way to delay the process, just as it was also possible that Andrew DeLuca decided that there was nothing more that he could’ve gotten out of fighting with him in court. (By the way, we love how the show handled the other doctors and DeLuca — there was tension, but nobody acted like he was the devil for wanting to charge someone who pummeled him in a fit of rage.)
Regardless of why Alex was free, it’s mostly just important that he was. Also, he was in bed all day! Meredith accidentally stumbled into him, and it was almost as though he just popped out of the ground like a whack-a-mole. She saw him, realized he was on the outside, and there was a sort of unparalleled joy that we haven’t seen from the character at any point this season.
Was there something more beyond that? This is all in the eye of the beholder. This was alluded to in the full review for this episode, but you could easily interpret the scene as the two parties about to kiss before going in for the hug. There was a sort of romantic closeness that was there in the moment — it may just be interpretation, but in that scene we saw more than ever why there are so many people out there ‘shipping the two of them.
At the moment, we do find ourselves in a very complicated place when assessing the two romantically. There is something valuable about having a friend of the opposite sex and never hooking up with them. That does send a great message. However, at the same exact time you also cannot disregard chemistry between two characters just for the sake of making a point. The question to ponder here is whether or not you see Jo and Alex being more endgame given the thawing of the ice between them recently, or if these two friends could become something more.
So where are Meredith and Alex going to go from here? If we had to guess, it’d just be back to work and business as usual. As much as this moment may have made us ponder over something more, we don’t get the sense that either one of them had any sort of further realization of anything. If that realization happens, it may come further down the line.
What do you think this moment meant, if anything beyond just two people hugging? Let us know in the attached comments, and head over here in the event you want to get some other news when it comes to the show. (Photo: ABC.)
