‘Call the Midwife’ overtakes ‘Victoria,’ ‘Poldark’ for National Television Awards – Period Drama prize

The National Television Awards took place in Great Britain on Wednesday, and this was a chance to see precisely what the British public thought about some of their favorite shows.

There were a lot of different honors to hand out over the course of the night, but the Period Drama category was the one that we personally had our eye on the most simply due to the fact that the majority of the shows nominated were the ones that we cover closely — especially “Call the Midwife,” “Poldark,” and “Victoria.” We were fairly convinced that we were going to see “Poldark” take home the prize after their aggressive campaign to get it, but in the end, the show with the highest ratings of the three we mentioned actually won out.

“Call the Midwife” took home the award this time, and we suppose that we’re not surprised only from the vantage point that this is a sneaky show. It doesn’t get the most publicity (especially here in America), but it has an incredibly loyal audience that sticks with it time and time again. It’s emotional, but also heartwarming often at the same time. You see through its lead characters that no matter how bad things get in the world, there’s some hope on the other side.

We’ll admit that of the three shows, we may be partial the most to “Poldark,” but this is also a category where there were so many great shows that you were going to get a great result no matter what. What these sort of awards shows do more than anything else is continue to validate just how strong and supportive many fans are of some of their favorite programs on the air. They’ll do anything they can to support them, and this devotion should come as a good sign that none of them are going to be going anywhere in the near future.
