‘Timeless’ episode 13: The pros and cons of Wyatt changing history

Timeless -On last night’s new episode of NBC’s “Timeless,” we saw effectively what was a bold move by Wyatt with one main motivation in mind: Trying to get back the very thing that he holds the most dear in his wife. He knows the person’s name who is responsible for killing his wife, and he even has the means and the understanding for what needs to be done. He wants to go back in time to before her killer was born, and figure out a way to keep him from coming into the world. This is an interesting strategy given that it is different than killing in theory; there are so many things that can happen to bring about a different result. The reality here is still that making one move could produce a domino effect, and it could be something that leads to a variety of other problems popping up later.

Let’s say, for example, he brings Jessica back, and then she accidentally causes a car accident a couple of days later that kills herself and two others. What if her killer had an impact on someone who ended up inventing something like Twitter, and then the entire social network is gone? There are so many possibilities that come out of her still being alive, and there are some out there that are negative. Her being alive is comforting in theory, but dangerous in practice.

Can you imagine if Wyatt goes through all of this trouble, comes back to the present, and realizes that his wife dies via some other means? What if they split up? This would be so heartbreaking after such a long journey to get her back.

On the flip side, there is the idealistic view that maybe he does all this, she comes back, and their relationship is as happy as can be. If that is the case, it does make you wonder if his own future changes to the extent that he never ends up joining the time-travel project in the first place. Is such a ripple effect possible that it would impact him from the moment he returned, or would he be immune to such a thing? There is a part of us hoping that all of this happens for the sake of curiosity, but “Timeless” is also a show where they make characters work for their happiness. Giving Wyatt what he wants, at least for now, feels a little too easy. The biggest pro is that Wyatt does this and he has everything he wants, even if it comes at the expense of others. Meanwhile, the biggest con is that somehow, it ends up making his life worse — and also somehow damages the team and the cause.

While he prepares to take a trip back to the 1980’s, Wyatt definitely has a lot to think about.
