Why ‘Agents of SHIELD’ fans can still have hope on potential season 5
Is this season of “Agents of SHIELD” the last one for ABC? We’ve certainly wondered that, if for no other reason than that the ratings have been consistently weak, and even rank below another superhero show on the night in “The Flash” over on The CW. This is a series that was once believed to be a potential monster hit, but it just couldn’t maintain the ratings in the early going. (We firmly believe that if the show we had now was the same show we had in the first half of season 1, the ratings would be about 75% better at the moment. Alas, that’s just not something that you can go back into a time machine and fix.
So even with weaker ratings, there does seem to be a slight cause of hope for most fans of “SHIELD” out there based on what the network’s programming head Channing Dungey had to say in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly:
“Look, we are incredibly encouraged. Season 4 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been creatively the strongest season we’ve had yet. The episodes just keep getting better and stronger. And that’s another one for us that we moved from 9 to 10 and yet even though the HUD levels are softer at 10, the live-same-day has remained the same and that’s another one of our shows which regularly goes up triple digits over the seven-day period, anywhere from 100 to 110 percent.”
This is no guarantee of a season 5 renewal, but remember that the show is popular on Netflix and around the world. Ultimately, our feeling is that it’d be great to have at least one more season, and use that even more in order to launch the upcoming “Inhumans” series that is also in develop featuring Black Bolt. These two shows obviously have a great deal in common, so it’d be foolish to take try and take advantage of that somehow from a network point of view.
Ultimately, there is a good bit of time still remaining to see what the future for “Agents of SHIELD” holds. Typically, networks will make their decisions on renewals / cancellations by around the time of upfronts in May. We’ll see if that happens once more here.
