Golden Globes 2017: Are Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig greatest presenters of all time?

Globes -

The 2017 Golden Globes gave us the gift of many things this year, but one of the biggest surprises may be the gift that it gave us in the form of Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig as co-presenters.

The two “Despicable Me” co-stars took to the stage on Sunday in order to present the award for Best Animated Feature Film, and what came out of this was one of the strangest, but funniest, presentations we’ve seen in over five years of covering award shows.

Basically, what they did was simple: Ask each other about the first time that they ever saw an animated movie. Given that the majority of these films out there are so optimistic and fun, you would think that there would be a similar amount of magic within their stories. Not so much. Instead, they each told stories that were incredibly dark about the terrible things that happened around when they watched these movies.

For Steve, his story revolved around “Fantasia,” and how watching this movie eventually led to this being the last time that he saw his father given that his mother showed up after the film to tell him that they were getting a divorce. Meanwhile, Kristen’s story revolved around the death of her dogs right before she watched “Bambi,” which was made worse by her grandfather going missing. (Also, “Bambi” is far from the best thing to watch after experiencing an animal death.)

If you listen to the audience reaction to this, it’s clear that Carell and Wiig had them eating out of the palm of their hands. This was a presentation that didn’t need any gimmicks or cheap ploys to get people paying attention; yet, it is one that we could see ourselves going back and watching multiple times.
