Golden Globes 2017: Billy Bob Thornton dedicates win to Luke Scott, late ‘Goliath’ production assistant
Billy Bob Thornton pulled off what was to many analysts (including us) a surprise Golden Globe win on Sunday for his work in the Amazon series “Goliath,” and what he did during his excellent acceptance speech is something to be remembered for a rather long time.
First, the actor chose to dive into a funny little bit with “Better Call Saul” star Bob Odenkirk, who suggested that the two had a longstanding “feud” that dated back for many years. Bob seemed to have a good laugh about it, but then things turned serious when he dedicated the award to Luke Scott, a late production assistant who worked on “Goliath.” Per his updated IMDb page, he worked on this show to go along with the entire first season of “Supergirl” (when it was airing on CBS) and the feature films “Pan and Wheelman.” Thornton praised him during the speech as one of the guys “who knew what he was doing.”
Our thoughts go out to Scott’s family; given that 2016 took so many notable people from us, there are unfortunately many occasions where we lost people who made a tremendous impact that very few people knew about. Kudos to Thornton for bringing this to the forefront, especially since it helps to shatter preconceived notions that actors are somehow “above” other people. Movies and TV shows are a team effort, and they all work together to make the best project possible. Choosing to recognize Scott in this way was a powerful opportunity to honor his memory.
We want to give Scott further credit for his contributions, but have been unable to locate an obituary or any other information about him online. That may be intentional, and out of respect for his family it doesn’t feel right to pry. Yet, we encourage anyone who knew Scott to share any memories of him in the comments.
We do imagine that there will be many more tributes and memories of those who have left us tonight; 2016 was such a sad year, and sometimes, reflection is one of the best ways to move forward. (Photo: Golden Globes.)
