‘Shameless’ season 7 finale reaction: A funeral, Ian and Trevor’s uncertainty, and more

At the end of last week’s episode of “Shameless,” there was definitely enough that happened that it could be considered a season finale. After all, Ian made the difficult decision to leave Mickey rather than going to Mexico, realizing that he wanted to follow a different path. The big event, though, was the death of Monica, which reverberated heavily across tonight’s episode courtesy of the character’s funeral.

This was a service that Fiona certainly did not want to pay a lot of money to have, but it did serve as a chance to get some much-needed closure, and for everyone to start to look ahead to what the next thing in their lives could be. Fiona decide to move on with her apartment-building project, while Lip decided to go to a meeting and Ian, who may end up back with Trevor after his Mickey admission, went back to work.

Meanwhile, is Debbie going to find some romance while at welding class? Anything is possible with this show. We in the end did get another reminder that Frank did care about Monica more than just as someone to do drugs with — speaking of drugs, the Gallaghers all had some meth that they could sell / do whatever with, and Fiona led the way as the person who didn’t want anything to do with the stuff. It’s like she recognized that this was the albatross that would weigh her down, so leaving it with Monica was the right move to make.

Ultimately, this wasn’t a finale full of huge cliffhangers; as a matter of fact, it offered a lot more closure and even hope for characters than we expected going in. While we’re thrilled that there is another season coming, it’s clear to us that this would have worked just fine as the series finale if it had been deemed so by Showtime. We would’ve have been mad, other than out of sadness that the show was over.
