‘Shameless’ season 8: Premiere date speculation; could it be final season?
Tonight, “Shameless” is airing its season 7 finale, but before we roll around to discussing that further a little bit later tonight, we should start things off here discussing what’s coming up more in the extended future.
Will there be an eighth season of the show? The answer for that is not 100% yes right now, but you may as well consider it to be somewhere around 99%. We’ve heard so many reports over time now that Showtime wants to be bringing you another batch of episodes, mostly during the complicated negotiation to get Emmy Rossum back once more in the role of Fiona. We don’t know all of the financials, but we know that she is earning at the very least just as much as co-star William H. Macy for it, if not more given that she wanted compensation for some of the seasons where she was paid less.
Rossum herself announced earlier in the week that her deal was done, and with her saying that she’ll be back to work in May on season 8, the easy assumption there is that the next season of the show will probably also premiere in the fall (think September / October) just like this one did. While we were skeptical that this shift would give the writers enough time to come up with stories this time, it worked out, and they’ll be back to having a full year again now at the very least.
We also wouldn’t say that the changed had too great of an impact on the ratings. While season 7 is so far down around 11% in total viewers versus season 6 (at least in terms of the live numbers), that’s about normal for most shows these days. Also, live ratings are such a small reflection of overall viewership for most shows, especially ones on premium cable.
As for whether or not season 8 could be the final season for the show, of course you do have to throw that possibility out there just because so many other Showtime series have ended at this point like “Dexter” and “Weeds.” With that said, there’s nothing officially stating that just yet.
