Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight on HBO? Of course, we do not blame anyone out there who would like to see the late-night institution back, especially after some recent time away. There is certainly a lot to discuss and given John’s long history of discussing the World Cup, now seems to be the proper time to get back into it … right?

Well, this is where we do have to share the bad news: You are going to be stuck waiting for a while longer in order to see it. There is no installment tonight, meaning that the summer break continues a while longer. There is still a lot more coming this season, and a few weeks off during either July or August is not altogether strange for the show. They still put out roughly 30 new installments a year, which is more than a number of other weekly series. It just feels like less a lot of the time when you have these breaks.

Can you argue that it is weird for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver to be off the air while HBO is airing one of their big hits in House of the Dragon? Absolutely, but here is your reminder that live ratings and lead-ins are really not that important to the network anymore. If this was twenty years ago, you’d better believe that they would be trying to sync up the schedules a little bit more! In this instance, however, they clearly do not feel that much of a need.

As for what Oliver will be discussing on the show when it returns, it is really far too early to say! A lot of that is tied simply to the unpredictable nature of the series in general, where it does often benefit from an element of surprise.
