The cliffhanger at the end of “Supernatural” season 11 was very much all about the Mary Winchester character, so with that in mind, we certainly wouldn’t be shocked if there were some people out there wondering why in the world we haven’t seen more of her through season 12? Well, there have been some other things to deal with including Lucifer as President, and apparently the producers deciding that it probably wouldn’t be great to spend the entire first half of the season watching the character try to understand how Snapchat works. (Kidding! Let’s hope that we never see Snapchat mentioned in any “Supernatural” episode for the rest of the series.)
Anyhow, rest assured that you will be seeing plenty of Mama Winchester coming up in the near future. Speaking per Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Andrew Dabb confirms that you will see Mary back when the show returns on January 26, and with a story that will throw her more directly into the universe:
“When she comes back into our story, which she’ll come back most strongly in episode 9, it’s going to be someone with a lot more of a sense of purpose … She’s got the lay of the land. She understands the world a little bit more. She understands her sons a little bit more. Starting in episode 9, she becomes a much more proactive character in our world. She’s not going to be necessarily living in the bunker with Sam and Dean but she’s going to be more of a player in our show.”
The comparison that we have in our head right now is with Castiel, someone who isn’t necessarily in every episode, but is still an incredibly important part of the show and who turns up on a fairly regular basis. We don’t know how much more of her we’ll get beyond this season unless someone wants to make “Supernatural” more of an ensemble show, but we’re interested in seeing what producers have up their sleeves.
