‘This Is Us’ episode 11: Series boss coy on Toby’s future

On Tuesday night’s fall finale of “This Is Us,” we ran into what was the latest in a series of many tear-jerking moments on the series; this time around, we’re specifically talking about what happened to Toby given just how sad and devastating it was. This is a man who was trying to get his future together, and that included winning Kate back. Unfortunately, his own history of unhealthy eating came back to haunt him courtesy of a heart attack.

As for whether or not we’re going to end up seeing this particular moment cost Toby his life, for the time being show boss Dan Fogelman is not saying. Here is what he did have to offer from both an optimistic and pessimistic viewpoint to Deadline:

“Hopefully by now we’ve shown that we’re not scared to make a big choice. That said: the show has an optimistic underbelly. So I guess you could say there’s an argument that could be made both for Toby ‘making it’ and ‘not making it.'”

Personally, we of course hope 100% to see the Toby character make it out of this situation alive, given that we do love the character very much and would hate to see him go. Yet, at the same exact time this is something that is a part of life, and even if he does go, the show could find some other uses for him moving forward. That’s one of the biggest sells of a show like “This Is Us”; with the story playing around with time as much as it does, it really does open up the door to potential opportunities to feature characters in a wide array of different lights and in unexpected ways.

Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait until early January to see precisely what the future holds when it comes to Toby in this instance.
