‘Saturday Night Live’ preview: Benedict Cumberbatch, Beck Bennett ‘try’ to avoid election talk

SNL -

In just a matter of hours, “Saturday Night Live” will be returning from a short hiatus for the first of at least two episodes, and this one has the potential to be rather great. After all, you’ve got a chance to see Benedict Cumberbatch host the show for the very first time, and he’s got fans from just about every fandom. He’s done “Sherlock,” he’s been in the “Star Trek” feature film franchise, and this weekend, he’s joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe officially as Doctor Strange. He’s going to pull viewers.

Now, it only seems right that he gets to showcase his comedy chops. One of the things that is the most interesting to us on the surface level about Benedict hosting this week is that it’s unusual to see a big movie star host on the same week that a blockbuster goes out. Because of the time needed to prepare for this show, his on-air press appearances have been a little more limited. Granted, he’s made many of them elsewhere over the past several weeks, but it’s an interesting move that could be a play to have “Doctor Strange” get a little bit of momentum later in the weekend after many Marvel super-fans check it out.

Given that Cumberbatch is extremely funny in many of his talk-show appearances, we imagine he will deliver the goods tonight, as well. While the promo below featuring both him and Beck Bennett attempting to avoid the election is short, it’s still worthy of a few good laughs.

The musical guest for the night is Solange, a woman with a great voice and a very unique sense of style. She may not be the most famous member of the Knowles family, but we have no doubt in her abilities.

If you missed the news yesterday (and it’s amazing news), Cumberbatch will be followed up on November 12 by Dave Chappelle hosting the show for (shockingly) the first time. It’s exciting, and it has us excited for “SNL” even though the election results do have us nervous. (Photo: NBC.)
