‘The X Factor’ UK: Dissecting the latest Ryan Lawrie nonsense

Ryan Lawrie -

The new season of “The X Factor” is officially underway, and for us as a writer, that means we’re getting to transition into something that we always enjoy: rolling our eyes at the British tabloids as they continue to blow various things out of proportion.

Today, that entails in particular some of the latest stories suggesting that contestant Ryan Lawrie, who won over the judges with his audition earlier this week, is actually some sort of huge pop star already who once had a single chart past Adele. While that may be true, it was for one single years ago that sent many of the proceeds to charity. Also, his billing as an opening act performing at the Capital Summertime Ball is a little deceptive in itself give that it does not mean that he has a record contract or is making all of his money full-time singing. We’re not entirely sure what the point of the “singers must be undiscovered to appear on this show” narrative really is, mostly because if singers had to fit that bill in order to try out here, odds are we’d be dealing with a much smaller pool of prospective candidates.

Anyhow, the show itself has already taken on the criticism towards Ryan, saying the following in a new statement per The Sun:

“Ryan won a competition to sing at the Capital Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium but he is not a signed artist and has never had a record deal. Anyone can apply for The X Factor whether they are professional or amateur, irrespective of their past experience and all contestants are auditioned on merit.”
