‘Girl Meets World’ season 3, episode 9 review: Lucas chooses between Riley, Maya
We’re not quite sure we’ve ever been so happy to put a love triangle to bed.
On Friday night’s new episode of “Girl Meets World,” Lucas finally made his choice between Riley between Maya, and it was really the choice that almost everyone saw coming: It was Riley! Sure, maybe it’s not a cause of great fanfare since this was set up in the pilot, but we will give the writers some credit for finding a unique way to tell this story without diving into teenage angst.
Specifically, it was Maya who brought about the whole choice as thanks to some advice from Josh, she made the realization that so much of her feelings for Lucas were brought out of a natural nature to want to understand what Riley saw in him. She wanted to protect her, and a big part of that involved putting herself in her shoes. You can argue that much of it was a little too neat and tidy, and we really would not argue all that much with this assertion.
Yet, at the same time, this was a satisfying ending since it allowed us the chance to see Maya get closer to Josh, someone who she has had some feelings for over the course of quite some time. She has a possible future with him, and it is something that is more hers. She challenges him in ways that don’t involve putting a smoothie on his head. Riley and Lucas may be somewhat predictable, but the scene between Maya and Lucas was really fantastic in its own right as she told him to go to Riley and lay it all on the line. It showed the friendship that they’ve formed.
In the end, “Girl Meets Ski Lodge (Part 2)” probably glossed over the Evan character a bit, though it was fun to learn at the end that he was the son of the infamous other woman from “Boy Meets World” so many years ago. Ultimately, we think this episode did a very good job of ending the love triangle story, setting up what some of the future could be, and also made some sense out of some previous decisions on the show. Grade: A-.
