‘Suits’ season 6 premiere reaction (exclusive): Creator Aaron Korsh on Frank Gallo reveal
“Suits” continues to find a way to surprise, and in some ways, turn a situation even more complicated than it already was. During the season 6 premiere on USA Wednesday night, we had that in the form of the big reveal that prisoner Frank Gallo (Paul Schulze) is far from a stranger to someone within Mike Ross’ inner circle. Specifically, he has a past with Harvey Specter, who was the man responsible for sending him to prison in the first place.
As you would imagine, having the Gallo character feel a very particular way about Mike’s friend and colleague is going to have ramifications. This is something that creator Aaron Korsh told us about when discussing why he and the writers chose to make this character tied to Mike’s outside world:
“The challenge of having Mike in prison, I kind of related to the challenge of having Mike leave the firm at the end of season 3. I personally don’t want to have my show so bifurcated that you have one character in a complete world with completely different people, another in another world, and a third in another world. So when Mike left the firm at the end of season 3, the challenge was how to integrate him into the lives of the other characters, with Rachel [being] an exception to that because they live together. The paradigm that we came up with was that they were going to be on opposite sides of a takeover battle, and that would force them to have interactions.
“Once we had a notion of Mike being in prison with a guy Harvey put behind bars, my reaction that was excellent. Harvey’s got to find out about that, he’s going to have to help him deal with that problem. [It will] intertwine them and connect them in a great way. It was one of the writers who pitched the idea, and I was like ‘that is awesome,’ and it gave the spine to the season because so many of the choices these guys make and the stories we tell in the first [ten episodes] are as a result of the revelation that Mike is in there with a guy Harvey put away.”
The new season will continue Wednesday nights on USA.
