‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13: On Owen’s (possible) Meredith – Riggs reaction

Over the final weeks of “Grey’s Anatomy” season 12, the show dropped a pretty hefty surprise in the Meredith – Riggs hookup. While it may be a permanent connection, it could still lead to drastic repercussions over time.

Specifically, just remember the complicated history between Riggs and Owen. While Owen may be starting to heal over the feud between these two guys, this could be seen as another dagger. Sure, it’s not on the level of losing a sister, but he’s protective of Meredith! Also, he was close to her late husband Derek, and considers a closer friend.

As Kevin McKidd notes to Entertainment Weekly (in some ways reiterating what was just noted), it is really a matter of when rather than if when it comes to more on this particular pairing being blown out of the water. As a viewer, preparing for it seems to be the right move:

“That’s going to come out, I’m sure, next season. I don’t think Owen is going to be happy about that. He’s almost becoming an unofficial brother to Meredith. Derek was his friend. He’ll be a bit territorial, to be honest. Also, the last time Riggs got close to somebody Owen cares about, she died. He might be being a little irrational when he finds out.”  

We would not say the show will hurry along this story, given that “Grey’s Anatomy” seasons are long. Also, there is a lot of other relationship drama to play out. Remember that April and Jackson are in a strange place, and Jo and Alex are at odds over a misunderstanding. There’s also the question of what lies ahead for Arizona with Callie gone, at least for now. Meredith – Riggs’ long-term status could remain a mystery for some time.
