‘Orange is the New Black’ season 4: Samira Wiley on key Poussey storyline

There were a few storylines on “Orange is the New Black” this season that we think are going to remember for many years to come, but the one moment that almost everyone will be talking about above all others is what happened to the Poussey character. One of the most notable people in the cast, we saw her killed in the penultimate episode of the season under pretty horrifying circumstances as the guards in the prison started to seize more and more control.

For Samira Wiley, one of the most difficult parts of playing this role was simply keeping what happened a secret. This is something that she explained further in a recent “Good Morning America” interview:

“I look back on that time and it was the hardest thing I ever had to do. I have no idea how I did it, but I’m happy that I did.”

Wiley also praised the show’s writers for the storyline leading to Poussey’s death, in particular for being “so socially conscious of what is going on in the world right now and understanding their responsibility and all of our responsibility as artists who reflect what is going on in our world.”

Obviously, this death was a difficult pill to swallow given that it happened to one of the show’s most-popular characters; yet, at the same time it really does enforce the whole mantra of “nobody is safe,” and we do think the show wanted to get that point across.
