‘Person of Interest’ season 6: Should it have happened?

Tonight, “Person of Interest” is coming to an end, and while we have had a little bit of time to prepare for this, we’re not entirely sure that makes it any easier. This was one of the greatest crime series of its time, and it fused that with science fiction in a way that very few other programs out there have.

Perhaps one of the reasons why saying goodbye to this show is so difficult is simply because we know that there was so much more potentially left in the tank for it, had it started out on a different network. CBS has higher ratings expectations than most, and it also hurt this show scheduling-wise that it came from an outside studio, and filmed in a more costly location in New York. There were unfortunately a few different things working against it.

Could we have gotten a season 6 elsewhere? It’s possible, and we would have liked to see what the plan for season 5 would have been had there been another year to play around with. For example, would we have gotten a reprieve on the death of Root for a little while, or some different guest actors? Would the show have kept their season 5 plans largely similar other than the final episodes? It’s ultimately hard to say without that time machine (as opposed to the other Machine), but there was story left in the tank.

Now that we’ve said all of that … we’re grateful that Jonathan Nolan and Greg Plageman chose to give the show a fitting end once it appeared clear to them that CBS wasn’t going to continue the show along. There’s something to be said for making sure you end your story on your terms rather than going out to sea hoping that another provider or network picks you up.

Do you wish that there was a season 6?
