‘Doctor Who’ season 10: Casting director on Pearl Mackie, Peter Capaldi

Pearl -

Doctor Who” season 10 is still a good ways away from airing on BBC, but that is not stopping us at all from getting some more news all about one of the biggest announcements of the year so far: The official hire of Pearl Mackie as the next Companion. The relatively-unknown actress is playing a character named Bill, and it came after a lengthy audition process.

Based on what we are hearing now, it may have been her final audition alongside star Peter Capaldi that helped to seal the deal. Here is what casting director Andy Pryor had to say in a chat with the Radio Times about the final stages of the process:

“Peter responded incredibly well to Pearl in her audition. It was like they were feeding off each other, swapping ideas of how they might play the scene. That’s always exciting; it’s full of possibility … It’s that thing that’s always impossible to put your finger on: chemistry,” says Pryor, who has worked on Doctor Who since it was revived in 2005. “You can’t predict that until you get them in the room together. When we did it became evident very quickly that they had a spark that was new and exciting and fresh.”

Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see what happens with Pearl in this role, but for the most part, we’re excited about the hire. If there is one thing the “Doctor Who” has instilled in us through the entirety of the revival series, it is hope. They have not given us a whole lot of reason to doubt some of their ideas as far as what they’ve brought to the table.
