‘Doctor Who’ season 10: Who is Pearl Mackie? About the new Companion

Doctor Who -Today, the BBC came up with a fairly unique idea in order to convince people to watch a football match: Put the “Doctor Who” companion announcement right in the middle of it. With that, there were thousands upon thousands of people like us staring at the TV who would have no business otherwise doing so during a sporting event.

So after an extensive period of waiting, the show / the network finally revealed early this evening that it is none other than Pearl Mackie! The network went this year for a relative unknown rather than someone who has an extensive resume already. “Svengali” and “Doctors” (ironically) are her only listed credits online, and she recently followed some other Companions on Twitter.

In the end, we really don’t think it is the announcement of the Companion that really matters so much, at least in comparison to what Steven Moffat and the writers choose to do coupled with their performance. Everyone always has hot-takes and opinions when it comes to names being thrown out there, but those can change in the blink of an eye when you actually see them on the show. Remember how there were folks skeptical of Matt Smith? We loved him.

With this in mind, it’s hard to have too much of a take on this particular casting at the moment, given that we don’t have too much to go on when it comes to a body of work for her. What we do have is the utmost trust in the network and Moffat to deliver a compelling story, and we hope that she brings a different flavor and personality than what we have seen over time from Jenna Coleman, Karen Gillan, and other Companions over the years.

You may see Mackie as early as in the Christmas Special later this year; season 10 is slated to premiere in 2017.
