‘The Voice UK’ season 6 will allow trios to audition

VoiceEven though “The Voice UK” just ended its five-season run on the BBC, ITV is wasting no time promoting their new property premiering next year. They already have their own Twitter account for the show, and they’re also getting ready to have auditions.

There’s one change, per the message below, that they are planning already: Allowing trios to audition for the first time ever. This is a rarity in some ways for the entire franchise; we cannot speak for many international versions, but we know that the American version allows only solo and duo acts to try out.

Do we think that this will legitimately have a huge impact on the show itself? Probably not, since the Swon Brothers are really the only noteworthy U.S. act to go far into the competition as a duo, and we cannot sit here and mention a single relevant duo act on the British version of the show. The format of this show with its Battle Rounds really doesn’t yield itself well to anyone other than solo performers, and typically it is harder for a viewer to get an emotional attachment to a group of singers rather than just one of them … especially when you have a show like this one where they barely give you any opportunity to know the contestants to begin with.

For us now, the larger question is what the coaching panel will look like. After some of the awkwardness between Boy George and Paloma Faith this season, we really hope that they bring in some people who really just try to be silly and fun. We’ve already got one deathly serious singing competition in “The X Factor,” so “The Voice” should really just be going for entertainment first and foremost.
