‘Dancing with the Stars 22’ review: Ginger Zee, Von Miller, Nyle DiMarco celebrate Memorable Years

Ginger -

It’s Most Memorable Year night on “Dancing with the Stars,” which does by and large mean one thing: You probably should go ahead and get out a handkerchief, since there will be some emotion, drama, and hopefully some competition to go along with all of that.

As always during these reviews, we’re going to update them as the night goes on. Stay tuned, and be sure to refresh the page often.

Ginger Zee & Valentin Chmerkovskiy – Contemporary – “Home” by Phillip Phillips. Was this a sweet tribute to her new family? This was lovely to watch, and the moment at the end with her husband was beautiful. We imagine we’re going to be saying these things a lot tonight. Score: 21.

Doug Flutie & Karina Smirnoff – Waltz – “Rainbow Connection” by Kermit the Frog. Did Doug’s routine make you feel deeply for him? It certainly did for us, hearing about how he lost both of his parents in one day. There was an obvious stumble near the end, and that’s why we can only imagine that this was a nearly-impossible routine for the judges to even critique. Score: 20.

Kim Fields & Sasha Farber – Foxtrot – “Facts of Life” TV Theme Song by Gloria Loring. Was this dance a revolution like the sitcom was to her career? This was if nothing else a lot of fun. Kim packed in a lot of energy, and most important she made the crowd and the judges smile. A nice tribute to her early career. Score: 22.

Von Miller & Witney Carson – Contemporary – “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins. Was there victory in the air tonight for Von? We’re not sure exactly how Carrie Ann gave him a better score than Len given that she was way harder on him for what was at least a decent routine, but okay. Score: 20.

Marla Maples & Tony Dovolani – Jive – “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. Did this teach you something new about Marla? It taught us something more about her being a mother, but it was certainly a solid routine. We’re just getting a little bored with the judges at this point for dishing out the same feedback time and time again. Score: 21.

Antonio Brown & Sharna Burgess – Foxtrot – “7 Years” by Lukas Graham. Did Antonio and Sharna give a really nice tribute to his own family? It was really sweet, and we liked the inclusion of his kid at the end of it. We just wish that someone would emerge tonight! It’s not really happening, and the sameness is making this feel rather routine. Score: 20.

Paige VanZant & Mark Ballas – Paso Doblé – “300 Violin Orchestra” by Jorge Quintero. Did this dance show Paige as more of a fighter? It was funny that we saw Len being so cranky about this innovative routine only to still give it a decent score. She’s a great dancer, and Mark is probably the best choreographer on the show right now. Score: 23.

Jodie Sweetin & Keo Motsepe – Foxtrot – “Rise Up” by Andra Day. Was this the perfect emblem to Jodie’s comeback story? It was really heartfelt and well-performed from start to finish. Also, it must be really refreshing for Keo to have a partner who is going to be around for a while. Score: 23.

Mischa Barton & Artem Chigvintsev – Samba – “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus. Was this dance really a party? Well … not really. In her montage we went from feeling sorry for her to being more or less frustrated with her over how she was treating poor Artem … but we do think she really tried hard to turn this around this week. She’s still not a great dancer, but there was more effort here. Score: 18.

Wanyá Morris & Lindsay Arnold – Waltz – “National Anthem 96’ Olympic Ceremonies” by Boyz II Men. How was this for an Olympic routine? We had no idea how in the world a National Anthem set dance would work, but it surprisingly did! Not only that, but it has us feeling even more hopeful for Wanya’s future this season. Score: 24.

Nyle DiMarco & Peta Murgatroyd – Tango – “Verge” by Owl City, Aloe Blacc. Is Nyle still a favorite to go far? We’d say so after getting the best score so far this season. Sure, there were little timing issues, but he really does have it down when it comes to the performance aspect of the piece and nailing the character. Score: 25.
