‘Saturday Night Live’ head Lorne Micheals dismisses talk of animosity with Kanye West
Usually when you are a performer on “Saturday Night Live,” the assumption here is naturally that you want people talking rather extensively about how you did, what you wore, or the environment surrounding you. More often than not, you really don’t want them talking about something that happened backstage.
However, this is precisely what has gone on the past two weeks after leaked audio surfaced featuring Kanye West venting to his people over some supposed last-second changes to the staging of his performances. Lorne Michaels was mentioned by name during the rant, but speaking to E! News, it really doesn’t seem as though there is any ill will. As a matter of fact, he’s fine to give him however much creative flexibility that he needs:
“That happened in the dressing room … Kanye’s been on the show a lot of years, and it’s always different. He’s an artist, you know? A great artist. When he did the 40th anniversary show, which I wanted him to be part of it, I had no idea what he was going to do, even 10 minutes before we went on the air … He arrived that day. But he just always delivers, and he’s Kanye.”
You will have to think just that this is going to lead to some more performances from West in the future, given that he can benefit from the attention the show provides, just as the show itself will probably get a ratings bump from having him. Michaels runs a smart business, and very much knows what sells and what doesn’t.
