‘Call the Midwife’ season 5, episode 7 preview: Patsy’s struggle; Dr. Turner awaits contraceptives
One of the biggest themes so far of “Call the Midwife” season 5 has been the advent of different discoveries around Poplar, and how they have started to change the lives of many of the characters. For Dr. Turner, he has already had to adjust to a certain extent to the dangers of certain drugs, including cigarettes. Now, we’re about to see the arrival of contraceptives into England in a way that they were not around before.
The synopsis below does a pretty good job of setting up some of what is coming here, including a powerful story for Patsy to go along with it:
“With autumn on its way, the appetite for change is rife across Poplar. As Dr Turner shares his excitement about the impending release of the contraceptive pill, not all of his counterparts at Nonnatus House are as keen for the social change it may bring. Meanwhile, Patsy realises that change isn’t always for the best as she struggles to help a transient Bargee woman, who is determined to give birth among her own community, rather than the modern comforts of the maternity home.
“As a huge storm threatens Poplar, Nurse Crane is called upon to assist a new mother in a post-natal emergency, the danger bringing a once-distant young couple closer as a result. As the storm subsides, it brings with it the welcome return of Sister Evangelina, herself changed by the time she has spent away from Nonnatus House.”
Who knows? By the time we make it to the end of this episode, we could be seeing a very different Poplar than the one we saw before, and many of the midwives may celebrate the fact that if this works, there may not be as many women giving birth in difficult situations. However, at the same time could this hurt their business? It’s a bit of a strange situation, but in the end this is a great move forward for all women as they hope to live healthy lives (or at least that’s our perception).
