2016 Super Bowl Commercials: Mountain Dew Kickstart introduces us to #PuppyMonkeyBaby

Dew -

There is one thing that Mountain Dew tends to do time and time again with some of their Super Bowl Commercials for the big game, and that is simple: Make them as weird as humanly possible. Almost all of them are super-memorable, but at the same time, the majority of them also have a knack for being completely and utterly odd. There’s not much else like them out there, and that helps them to stand out.

Take, for example, this year when the beverage brand decides that the time is right to introduce us to the innovation known only as #PuppyMonkeyBaby. It’s weird, it’s funny, and it’s almost perfect for whatever this brand is trying to do.

The idea – Since Mountain Dew Kickstart combines three great things into one (caffeine, Dew, and juice), apparently they think that the same thing can be said for a #PuppyMonkeyBaby. This creature manages to steal the show.

What works – Basically if you’re watching this commercial stoned, you may think it is the greatest thing of all time … and Mountain Dew has done a good job appealing to that sort of hipster / Dorito-eating market over time. The product is marketed as edgy and crazy, and there is something about hearing #PuppyMonkeyBaby in here that is incredibly infectious.

What doesn’t – The one odd thing about the premise is that it’s not really like Kickstart is combining three different things at all, given that regular Dew also has caffeine in it. They could’ve just had a #PuppyMonkey and be done with it.

Overall Grade – B+. Some people will probably find the add disturbing and weird, but we enjoy these much more than the other “weird” ads that Skittles tend to put out.
