‘Doctor Who’ actually disappears from American Netflix (to the dismay of all)

Doctor WhoWe wish we were here to report happier news for Netflix users, but alas, that is not the case.

Today, BBC’s “Doctor Who” is officially unavailable on the streaming giant, and it comes after the show was almost removed in the past but eventually brought back. There is still hope that a new deal will be reached for the series eventually, but for now, this is the darkest timeline. To compare this situation more to “Doctor Who” itself, this is the cliffhanger to one of the two-parters this year where it looked like all was lost for The Doctor and there was no way he and Clara would be able to get out of their present bind.

The reason why the show is gone is simply a matter of licensing, and the reality is that beloved shows are going to leave the service. They have to. There’s simply no room for everything without Netflix raising the subscription price or cutting down on some of the originals that they do have. Our real fear is that someday many acquisitions will fade in comparison to the originals … but we still think the odds of that happening are very low. Therefore, it’s probably not anything serious to worry about. The larger question is why allow this show to go when there are many other TV series / movies on the service that are very negatively-received. We feel like subscribers would be happy to lose two or three critically-loathed-but-cheaper shows if it meant that “Doctor Who” or some other BBC shows could return. (We’re still gutted that “Fawlty Towers” isn’t on there anymore.)

For now, we’ll just wait patiently to see if The Doctor can return to the service in the near future.
