‘Saturday Night Live’ re-watch: Does Larry David’s impersonation of Bernie Sanders still draw laughs?

SNL -Tonight, “Saturday Night Live” is re-airing their episode hosted by Tracy Morgan, and we always like to do a re-watch article on the occasion to examine a sketch that was particularly popular the night of to see if it still holds up.

When you watch tonight’s episode, you rest assured that there is one sketch in particular that will still garner plenty of attention: The CNN Democratic debate piece featuring Larry David as Bernie Sanders. If there’s one thing you can say about this episode that makes us almost feel bad for Tracy, it is that this particular sketch has really overshadowed him completely when it comes to attention.

Ultimately, it’s impossible to deny that David’s impersonation is hysterically funny, and even without the element of surprise attached to it, it does still very much hold up. The writing is just that good, and while we’re not sure if David is doing that much of an impression, he’s just perfect casting for this role. It was smart for “SNL” to use him twice this fall, given that we’re still not sure how much in the new year he will be used if Hillary Clinton starts to dominate the primaries.

One final thing we’ll say here is that even though Jim Webb has already dropped out of the race, there is something about watching Alec Baldwin play the character here that is even funnier. Maybe much of it is due to the fact that Baldwin’s version of Webb was always very steadfast and defiant over the lack of airtime he received. There’s something about watching this now for whatever reason that makes it all the funnier.
