‘Girl Meets World’ season 2, episode 23 reaction: Maya’s dad arrives, but will she forgive him?

Forgiveness -For those of who were hoping for further resolution from “Girl Meets Texas” on Friday night’s new episode of “Girl Meets World,” perhaps you were a little bit disappointed. However, what you had instead was one of the more emotional and moralistic episodes of the entire series’ run to date.

Was “Girl Meets the Forgiveness Project” an enjoyable episode? We suppose that depends heavily on how you define enjoyment. We feel like some episodes of the show are meant mostly to be silly, or play up the relationships between main characters. Meanwhile, others teach a lesson, or try to combine some humor with serious stuff. This was almost all serious stuff, as we met Maya’s father for the first time and he proved to be a fairly complicated man. He had little money, guilt over walking out on his daughter, and it was impossible for her to forgive him. This is something that she felt like she had to do thanks to Cory’s new assignment, which required her to seek out some forgiveness.

As Cory eventually told her, this was more about trying to seek out forgiveness within herself rather than for her father. She wasn’t the reason he left; instead, it was about him not being ready to be a father, and running when the going was tough.

Was this episode important? Definitely so, and it may have changed the minds of many insecure young viewers. We’re not going to begrudge it for lacking much humor or nostalgia (even though this is what we watch for), but we do hope that it brings us back to an equilibrium in the coming weeks. Also, we will be interested to see if the show revisits Maya’s father down the line to see if anything at all has changed.
