‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 7, episode 5 preview: Ian Somerhalder’s Damon tries to change

DamonTonight, “The Vampire Diaries” brought us everything from Nora and Mary Louise at a college dance to Alaric and Bonnie doing their best attempt at necromancy. In other words, this is all in a day’s work for this show.

Next week’s new episode is entitled “Live Through This,” and we are starting to think as though this one in particular could contain many a watershed moment for Ian Somerhalder’s character of Damon. Could something inspire him to be different, and less off-the-rails? It appears so, and that this answer is none other than the same answer we’ve seen so many times before: Elena. The synopsis, if you have not seen it already, is below:

“After realizing the downward spiral he was on, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) decides he’s going to turn over a new leaf and that his actions moving forward will do right by Elena.  Lily (guest star Annie Wersching) prepares for the arrival of a special figure from her past, while Enzo (Michael Malarkey) stands by not sure what to expect.  Elsewhere, at Caroline’s (Candice King) urging, Stefan (Paul Wesley) comes face-to-face with Valerie (guest star Elizabeth Blackmore) and learns some upsetting details about her past, while Enzo and Bonnie (Kat Graham) find themselves at odds when they’re forced to fend off a violent threat.  Finally, when Bonnie learns some disturbing information involving the Phoenix stone, she is forced to confront Alaric (Matt Davis).”

By the time we near the end of this particular episode, our hope is mostly that we start to understand more of where Valerie comes from, if Caroline and Stefan are going to be smooth sailing again, and also what the consequences are for Alaric and Bonnie.
