‘Luther’ season 4, episode 1 review: Is Alice Morgan dead?
It has been a very long time since we’ve had new episodes of “Luther” and if you couple that with how popular Idris Elba is these days we were starting to wonder if we were ever going to get more episodes, but here we are at the start of season 4! When we last saw John, he had sent his famous tweed coat down the river and walked off the bridge with Alice by his side – is he leaving his old life behind? It certainly seemed that way with the season 3 finale, but things are never what they seem to be with this show, which is one of the many reasons we are so crazy about it.
If you were hoping to see more of Alice this season, you will be disappointed to know that she won’t be around much. Luther hasn’t seen her since the bridge (or at least that’s what he’s telling the detectives looking for her). They tell Luther that Alice has been found dead and that fingerprints, and dental records confirm it’s her. They say that she had a concussion after a car crash and fell into the water and drown. Is Alice really dead? We aren’t convinced (and Luther doesn’t look convinced either) – but we do know that she isn’t scheduled to be part of this season.
Luther starts calling around to find out more information about Alice Morgan’s death because he doesn’t feel that it’s an accident (especially after his burner phone to Alice has been stolen from his house). He learns that Alice’s death is being treated as an accident and not as a murder, and it lights a fire under him to start investigating again.
Luther finds out that someone contracted a hit on Alice and he’s got his first lead on bringing her murderer to justice. He finds a man named George and while talking to him Luther reveals that he was planning on leaving the country to be with her. George tells him that she came to him with diamonds to sell because she and Luther are running away together and she needed money, so they strike a deal, but instead George turned on her and tries to rip her off. She puts up a fight and beats his men to a pulp and took off, and Luther realizes that George isn’t the man that killed Alice. There is a moment of hope for Luther when a woman approaches him saying that she has a message for him from Alice, but the message isn’t revealed.
So what is going to bring Luther back to work again? After Theo gets blown up hunting a cannibal serial killer, he decides to head back to the office and dive into the case with Emma by his side willing to do whatever it takes to find this killer. Also, he has more then one of his signature tweed coats, so that’s back in action. Hard to picture Luther without that coat!
This was an outstanding premiere episode and even though “Luther” has scared us into thinking that Alice might actually be dead we are hopeful that she is playing a long con and that we may see her again in season 5. Nothing is ever what it seems on this show, and that’s one of the many reasons why we are so in love with it. Episode grade: A
