‘Mr. Robot’ episode 8 review: Elliot’s surprising relatives

While we thought that last week’s new episode of “Mr. Robot” was for the most part entertaining, we do feel like we spent so much time studying the emptiness within Elliot that we were not left with too much time to explore some other avenues.

Let’s just say that if last week was slow, tonight was almost a high-speed rail coming right in your direction. We don’t even want to take time setting anything up before getting to the pair of surprises for the night: Mr. Robot is Elliot’s father, and Darlene is his sister. If you predicted both of these, there has to be some sort of imaginary prize for you somewhere. Our reality here is that we could imagine the Mr. Robot theory pretty easily, given that these two characters had a relationship indicative of such a thing. That’s why there were at one point guesses about whether or not Mr. Robot was actually Elliot’s conscience and was not actually a real person.

But Darlene? We never saw that one coming. It’s not just the fact that he is related to them that is interesting; it’s that he suffers these breaks where he doesn’t even remember them. That is somewhat terrifying in a way for him, and we hope that the show gives us an alternate point of view to further explore this. We’ve already established that Elliot is an unreliable narrator, and seeing this world through his eyes at times creates even more confusion.

After tonight, we do at least know for sure that this certain continues to become even more excellent, and we continue to be surprised by the majority of the twists and turns. We’re also thrilled to see that the plan is moving forward against Evil Corp. Anything that sees Tyrell taken down a peg (though Joanna already does that from time to time) is worthy of celebration in our book. Grade: A-.
